DANBURY, Conn. - Sophomore goalkeeper
Gracen Regan (Monroe, N.J.) made three saves and collected a shutout, as the Western Connecticut State University Wolves and the New Jersey City University Gothic Knights tied, 0-0, in women's soccer action this afternoon at Westside Stadium. WestConn snaps a two-game losing skid to move to 8-5-2while the Gothic Knights are now 4-2-5. The Wolves will visit Little East Conference (LEC) rival UMass-Dartmouth next on Saturday at 1 p.m.
WestConn had numerous close chances offensively throughout the game, including multiple near misses on attempted connections from senior forward
Suzana Imetovski (Seymour, Conn.) to classmate
Adriana Alfano (New Milford, Conn.). Alfano also stole the ball from the New Jersey City defense but had her one-on-one opportunity stopped by Gothic Knights goalie Lorraine Valenzuela in the 17th minute, while Imetovksi was similarly denied by Valenzuela on a breakaway 10 minutes later. WestConn outshot New Jersey City, 7-2, in the first half.
Valenzuela continued to stymie the Wolves in the second half, making five of her eight saves after intermission including one more each against Alfano and Imetovski who combined for 13 shots in the contests. WestConn appeared to break the stalemate in the 74th minute when junior
Hannah Blacher (Allendale, N.J.) sent a direct kick through the Gothic Knights wall that caromed to junior
Casey Papp (Seaford, N.Y.) who knocked the ball into the net only to be whistled for offsides. Imetovski beat Valenzuela moments later in transition but her shots sailed low and just wide of the open net. WestConn finished with an 18-to-6 shooting edge.
