DANBURY, Conn. - Three different players scored to lead the Western Connecticut State University field hockey team to a thrilling 3-2 win over visiting archrival Eastern Connecticut in a Little East Conference battle at the Westside Athletic Complex on Wednesday evening.
With the win, the Wolves snapped a three-game skid, improving to 7-11 overall and 2-3 in league play to jump ahead of the Warriors in the standings. The visitors sank to 6-10 and 1-4.
Eastern held a 17-10 advantage in shots while also holding a staggering 16-3 lead in penalty corners. However, the hosts converted when it mattered most. Trailing 1-0 early in the game, junior
Miah Ruiz (New Fairfield, Conn.) gathered a rebound and ripped a shot into the twine to knot the count at 1-1.
WestConn captured the lead in the second stanza off yet another rebound when rookie midfielder
Jaelyn Moulton (Stafford Springs, Conn.) blasted a low liner into the back of the cage. Eastern countered in the third when sophomore forward Grace Barlage (Guilford, Conn.) smacked a shot underneath the crossbar from 10 yards out to even the score at 2-2. Moments later, the Warriors had a chance to regain the lead but WestConn rookie netminder
Gracie Bomboy (Bainbridge, N.Y.) stood strong and thwarted a penalty stroke attempt.
Rookie midfielder
Nora Tracy (Middlebury, Conn.) fired home the game-winner midway through the fourth when she managed to retrieve a rebound and stuff the ball just over the line. The Wolves faced tremendous pressure in the waning minutes but were able to keep the Warriors from canning the equalizer.
Bomboy was stellar in between the pipes, recording 10 saves, while two different goalies split time for Eastern and combined for five.
WestConn returns to action for its regular season finale against visiting league nemesis Southern Maine on Saturday at 11 a.m. The LEC Championship Postseason Tournament is slated to begin on Tuesday.
