DANBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team played to a scoreless tie against visiting Little East Conference nemesis Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at the Westside Athletic Complex.
With the deadlock, the Wolves moved to 9-5-4 overall and 4-1-2 in league play, while the Huskies went to 12-2-3 and 6-0-1.Â
The teams finished each statistical column at a nearly identical pace. Each team had numerous high quality scoring chances in the first half. The visitors appeared to net a goal midway through the first half when junior midfielder Cierra Hill (Pembroke, NH) tickled the twine with a low shot just inside the right post. However, the goal was disallowed due to an offsides call. Moments later, the hosts nearly broke the ice when senior forward Suzanna Imetovski (Seymour, Conn.) fired a cross from goal line extended but the ensuing shot was chipped just over the crossbar. Shortly thereafter, the Huskies ripped a shot headed for the empty side of the net but junior
Sophia Onek (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) came out of nowhere to block the shot before it edged across the line.Â
WestConn sophomore goalkeeper
Gracen Regan (Monroe, N.J.) then stopped a point blank shot to keep the Huskies off the board. She finished the contest with four saves. Southern Maine netminder Hunter Stonebraker (Mont Vernon, N.H.) was equally impressive in between the iron, recording seven saves.
The Wolves return to the field when they head to LEC nemesis Rhode Island College for their regular season finale on Saturday at 2 p.m.
