KEENE, N.H. - Three different players netted goals but it wasn't enough as the Western Connecticut State University field hockey squad fell at Little East Conference foe Keene State, 10-3, on Saturday afternoon at Owl Athletic Complex.
The WestConn goals came from junior
Miah Ruiz (New Fairfield, Conn.), sophomore
Kaitlyn Biase (Nesconset, N.Y.) and classmate
Alyssa Montalvo (Holbrook, N.Y.). Grace Bazin and Meghan Daileanes each registered hat tricks to lead the hosts, while Irini Stefanakos tallied one scoring strike while dishing out a trio of assists.
As the score would indicate, the Owls controlled the majority of play. They finished ahead in shots, 34-13, and penalty corners, 11-8. Daileanes broke the ice less than four minutes into the contest before Bazin connected on her team-leading 21st goal of the season moments later. Stefankanos then tallied her lone goal, widening the gap to 3-0 to end the opening quarter.
After an early second quarter goal from the Owls, WestConn fought back. Montalvo fired home her second goal of the campaign before Biase hit her first, slicing the deficit to 4-2. However, the Wolves would not get any closer as Keene State reeled off a 5-0 run en route to the victory. With the loss, the Wolves dropped to 6-10 overall and 1-3 in league play, while the Owls improved to 13-3 and 4-0.Â
WestConn returns to action when they head to Framingham State on Tuesday at 7 p.m. before rounding out the regular season slate with a pair of LEC contests at the WAC.
