DANBURY, Conn. - Five seniors were honored before the match as the Western Connecticut State University women's tennis team fell to visiting UMass Boston, 8-1, in a Little East Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Wolves dropped to 4-9 and 2-6 while the Beacons - ranked No. 1 in the league - improved to 11-2 and 8-0.
After dropping all three of the doubles matches, WestConn was able to come away with a win in singles play. Senior
Brooke Stillman (Brookfield, Conn.) notched the opening set victory, 6-3, before being downed in the second, 6-0. However, she stood strong in the third to earn the match victory. Classmates
Sophie Charbonneau (Oakville, Conn.) and
Diana Rebelo (Naugatuck, Conn.) each fell in their respective opening sets before rallying to seize 3-0 leads in their second sets. However, the Beacons stormed back to earn both singles victories.
"We celebrated senior day today and it was a memorable one. The Fab Five of seniors
Sarah Cipriano (Watertown, Conn.),
Melanie Grasso (New Fairfield, Conn.), Rebelo, Charbonneau and Stillman have carried this program for 4 amazing years and I'm so proud and grateful. Also, to be able to share this ride with my daughter, Brooke, has been a blessed journey. We fell short of our playoff goal this season, but we will work hard and look to rebound next season," stated WestConn head coach Shawn Stillman following the action.
