DANBURY, Conn. -
Constance Conlan (Chatham, N.J) and
Reilly Schmidt (Patchogue, N.Y.) were honored before the game on Senior Day, however, the Western Connecticut State University field hockey team fell to visiting Little East Conference foe Vermont State University Castleton, 5-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex.
With the loss, the Wolves dropped to 5-9 overall and 1-2 in league play, while the Spartans improved to 10-4 and 1-0.
The visitors outshot the hosts by a 26-2 margin and controlled the tempo throughout the matchup. First-year Emilee Higgins (Fair Haven, Vt.) got things started for Castleton when she took a feed across the circle and knocked the ball into the open side of the net less than four minutes into the action. Moments later, fifth-year Arianna Spiezio (Greenwich, N.Y.) buried a rebound attempt, widening the gap to 2-0. The Spartans extended the lead to 3-0 before halftime.
It was a similar story in the second half. Sophomore forward Emily Downing (Plymouth, N.H.) canned her team-leading 10th goal of the campaign in the third stanza before the visitors tacked on another in the fourth, wrapping the count up at 5-0.
WestConn rookie goalkeeper
Jaden Kilmer (East Islip, N.Y.) took the loss but kept the contest from getting out of hand en route to recording 15 saves.
The Wolves return to the field when they square up against non-conference opponent Nichols College on Youth Day at the WAC. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
