WORCESTER, Mass. - Despite outshooting the hosts, 26-11, and holding a commanding edge in corner kicks, 13-1, the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss at Worcester State in a non-conference contest on Tuesday evening at John Coughlin Field. 

With the setback, the Wolves fell to 7-4-1 overall while the Lancers improved to 3-5-1.

The visitors pounced on the hosts in the early going. WestConn had four shots and a pair of corners less than nine minutes into the first half including a penalty kick attempt that just sailed wide of the twine. However, Worcester State capitalized on its early opportunity when Olivia Magierowski managed to gather the ball and find the back of the net for her first goal of the campaign. It would be the only shot to cross the goal line.

The Wolves didn't give up and continued to apply pressure to the Lancers, finishing the half with a 14-7 lead in shots. It was a similar story in the second stanza as WestConn pushed even harder for the equalizer. However, Worcester State netminder Ella Gumienny was up to the task, coming away with 12 saves while helping her squad escape with the stunning victory. WestConn sophomore goalkeeper Gracen Regan (Monroe, N.J.) would finish with six stops. 

The Wolves will look to get back to their winning ways when they head to Little East Conference nemesis Plymouth State University on Saturday at 11 a.m.
