Young Collects 1,000th Career Point as Men's Basketball Downs UMass Boston

DANBURY, Conn. - Graduate student forward Jaheim Young (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied his 1,000th career point on Wednesday night, lifting the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team to a 90-67 victory over UMass Boston in a Little East Conference contest at Feldman Arena. Standing near the top of the key, Young took a feed from junior forward Malik Cole (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and buried a three-pointer to reach the milestone midway thru the first half.

Young finished the night with a team-high 15 points to go along with five rebounds and a game-high four steals. Junior guard Cameron Gallon (York, Pa.) added 11 points, while classmate Jeremiah Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and rookie C.J. Riley (Yonkers, N.Y.) each contributed 10.

Emanuel Zayas led the Beacons with 15 points, while Hector Perez came off the bench to chip in with 14.

The hosts would lead by a 13-point advantage before the visitors sliced the deficit to 40-35 at the break. However, WestConn gradually built up a double digit lead once again in the second half before widening the gap to 72-50 when Gallon grabbed an offensive board and notched a dunk. The Beacons would not recover.

WestConn forced 28 turnovers which led to 39 points. The Wolves coughed the ball up just 13 times. They also sank 46 percent of their shots from the floor while the visitors connected at just a 34 percent clip.

With the win, WestConn improved to 15-4 overall and 8-2 in league play, while UMass Boston fell to 5-14 and 4-6. WestConn returns to the court when they host Vermont State University Castleton on Saturday at 4 p.m.
