DANBURY, Conn. - Juniors
Bodhi Kitt (Norwalk, Conn.) and
Melanie Grasso (New Fairfield, Conn.) won their respective doubles and singles matches, however, the Western Connecticut State University women's tennis squad was edged by Plymouth State University, 5-4, in a Little East Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.
The duo of Kitt and Grasso got things started as they cruised to an 8-1 win. Juniors
Brooke Stillman and
Sarah Cipriano (No. 3) saw an early lead of 3-0 and 5-2 disappear as they dropped six straight games en route to falling 8-5.
In singles, needing four of six courts, Kitt (No. 1) wasted no time in winning and Grasso (No. 2) won by default as her opponent fell to injury late in the second set.
Soon thereafter, after dropping her first, Cipriano (No. 3) stormed back winning 12 of the next 15 games. WestConn was up 4-2 in the match.
Junior
Diana Rebelo (No. 4) just finished splitting the first two sets both by tiebreakers. Moments later, Charbonneau (No. 5) just fell short losing in three sets. After Stillman (No. 6) lost, the score was 4-4 with Rebelo battling in the third set. As players and fans sat courtside watching an intensely competitive match, Rebelo finally fell shy losing 6-4 in the third set.
"This match didn't come down to the last court, it was decided after doubles. We need to do better to start the match. Our singles courts have performed very well throughout the season, but we need to take the pressure off those courts by grabbing some wins in doubles. It's critical," stated Wolves head coach Shawn Stillman following play.Â
With the loss, WestConn dropped to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in league play. The Panthers improved to 3-3 and 1-2. The Wolves will look to rebound when they host the University of St. Joseph in a non-league affair on Monday at 3:30 p.m.
