DANBURY, Conn. - Junior
Adriana Alfano (New Milford, Conn.) and freshman goalkeeper
Gracen Regan (Monroe, N.J.) made six saves to record her first career shutout and lead the Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a 3-0 victory over the VTSU Castleton Spartans in Little East Conference (LEC) women's soccer action on a chilly afternoon with light rain at Westside Complex. WestConn improves to 2-3-4 overall and 1-0-1 in the Little East while extending its unbeaten streak to four games (2-0-2). The Spartans drop to 1-7 overall and 0-2 in the league with their sixth setback in a row.
The Wolves scored all three of the game's goals in the first half, beginning just 1:44 into the game when junior
Suzana Imetovski (Seymour, Conn.) poked in a loose ball in front of the net after the initial shot by Alfano was saved by Castleotn goalie Emma Ezzo. WestConn struck again 80 seconds later, as senior
Myah Croze (Bristol, Conn.) blasted in a shot from outside the box. WestConn's third goal came in the 10th minute when sophomore
Sophia Onek (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) converted on a cross by Alfano after
Julia DePalma (Kings Park, N.Y) had threaded a pass up the Alfano up the right sideline.
Neither team scored in the second half, although WestConn outshot Castleton, 11-6, to finish with a 17-to-11 shooting edge for the game. The Spartans were also whistled for 14 fouls to just seven for the Wolves. Regan came up big on Castleton's closest chance of the game in the 56th minute on a hard shot in transition by Castleton's Megan Ezzo. Emma Ezzo had eight saves including six after intermission. Imetovski had two of the WestConn's near misses after halftime, missing just wide on a rebound from close and having a rocket from the right stopped by Emma Ezzo in the 75th minute.
