DANBURY, Conn. - Junior midfielder
Kadin Talho (Waterbury, Conn.) netted a pair of goals as the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team rallied to earn a 2-2 tie against visiting non-league opponent Western New England University on Tuesday night at the Westside Athletic Complex.
With the draw, the Wolves moved to 3-1-2 overall while the Golden Bears went to 0-3-4.
The action went back-and-forth much of the first half. The visitors got the first quality scoring chance of the contest when junior Mike Milazzo (Old Lyme, Conn.) rang a header off the crossbar. He would break the ice later in the stanza when he fired home a low penalty kick after being hauled down inside the box, giving Western New England a 1-0 advantage.
The hosts countered with several opportunties but were unable to connect with the back of the net. The Golden Bears extended the lead to 2-0 in the 37th minute of play when sophomore Shay O'Neill (Belchertown, Mass.) gathered a loose ball off a cross attempt and blasted a shot into the twine.
WestConn came out determined in the second half. Several header attempts either just missed or were turned aside by Golden Bear rookie goalkeeper Braylon Casinghino (Brimfield, Mass.). However, Talho erupted in the waning minutes. He fired home a shot through a crowd of defenders from 25 yards out, slicing the deficit to 2-1 at 84:43. Moments later, Talho lined up for a free kick just outside the top of the box and ripped a rocket around the defender wall just inside the right post. It knotted the count at 2-2 and sent the WAC crowd into a frenzy with just under three minutes remaining.
Wolves sophomore netminder
Zachary Benson (Milford, Conn.) was forced out of the game due to injury before junior
Matthew Silva (Danbury, Conn.) relieved him and finished with two saves. Casinghino recorded five for the visitors.
WestConn returns to action when they host non-conference foe Lehman College on Thursday at 6 p.m.
