DANBURY, Conn. -
Chance Campbell (Bartow, Fla.) and
Eduardo Vargas (Norwalk, Conn.) scored WestConn goals to lead the Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Vassar College Brewers in the men's soccer season opener for both teams this afternoon at Westside Athletic Complex. The Wolves, 20-0-2 last season, extend their unbeaten streak to 23 games and will host Drew in their next game on Wednesday, September 6 at 7 p.m. Vassar plays Mount St. Mary in its home opener on Sunday at 2 p.m.
After an early save by WestConn goalie
Zachary Benson (Milford, Conn.), Campbell opened the scoring 13 minutes into the game on a goal from
Nikolas Chevres (Miami, Fla.). Brewer goalie Patrick Gale made a diving save against a curling corner kick from the right side by WestConn's
Daniel Russo (Trumbull, Conn.) moments later, before Vargas added his unassisted marker in the 22nd minute for the Wolves. Neither team put a shot on goal for the next 20-plus minutes until Vassar's Danny Berry was denied by Benson with just under two minutes left in the first half. The Wolves had an 8-to-5 shooting edge in the first 45 minutes.
Vassar cut its deficit in half 4:03 into the second stanza when Owen Fauth converted on a penalty kick. The score remained stuck at 2-1 in the home team's favor until Russo sent a WestConn penalty kick past a diving Gale to increase the Wolves' lead to 3-1 in the 87th minute. Benson made two saves and moves to 1-0, having split the game with Matt Silva (Danbury, Conn.) who did not record a save. Gale had two stops for the Brewers. Each team took 10 shots and five corner kicks.
