DANBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University Wolves saw their 23-match unbeaten streak come to an end with a 3-2 setback against the visiting Drew University Rangers in men's soccer action this evening at Westside Athletic Complex. WestConn falls to 1-1 with its first loss since November 6, 2021, while the Rangers pick up their first victory to improve to 1-1-1. The Wolves were 20-0-2 in 2022. Junior midfielder
Kadin Talho (Waterbury, Conn.) had a goal and an assist for the Wolves. James Cahill broke a 2-2 tie with the game-winning goal for Drew in the 84th minute.
WestConn dominated play early, almost scoring on a shot by senior midfielder
Kent Eannarino (Brookfield, Conn.) on a shot that hit the cross bar and again on a blast from close and straight-on by rookie
Chance Campbell (Bartow, Fla.) that was saved by Ranger goalie Brandon Jachera. The Wolves broke through in the 17th minute when Talho rocketed a shot from the right wing that was stopped by Jachera but the ball dribbled away toward the far post for midfielder
Marc Kyriakidis (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) to send into the net.
Drew evened the score in the 25th minute on a marker by Matt Agudelo who converted on a pass from the left side by Kevin Kiernan. WestConn held an 11-to-2 shooting advantage after one half but the game was tied 1-all. Talho gave the Wolves the lead quickly after intermission, knocking home a penalty kick past Jachera and into the lower left corner of the goal in the 46th minute. After the Rangers tied the game at 2-2 on a goal by Jonathan Gutierrez that was assisted by Agudelo, Talho nearly struck again but Jachera dove high and to his left to knock the shot just over the cross bar.
WestConn freshman
Ryan Stillman (Windsor, Conn.) and sophomore
Jacob Burdick (Essex, Conn.) both got decent looks in the 72nd minute but were just off the mark, and the home team did not get off a shot over the final 17 minutes. With 5:22 on the clock, Cahill headed the ball toward the Wolves' goal after a Drew corner kick and WestConn junior goalkeeper
Matthew Silva (Danbury, Conn.) knocked the ball away, but it went right to Cahill in the middle of the box who shot it into the net for the clincher. Silva, who came in at the half for sophomore
Zachary Benson (Milford, Conn.), recorded the lone WestConn save, while Jachera had seven stops for Drew.
