Comeback Falls Short At Skidmore, 14-11

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -  Sophomore attack Julian Duque (Mastic, N.Y.) scored three goals, including the game-tying marker for the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team, before host Skidmore College deposited the game's final three goals in a 14-11 Wolves' loss on Wednesday afternoon.

WestConn, now 8-3, fell behind 10-3 at the end of the second period, but scored six straight goals in the third stanza.  Senior Stephen Cicchetti (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) finished off an assist from Trey Aronow (Holbrook, N.Y.) to bring the visitors within one goal, 10-9, with 1:45 remaining in the third quarter.

Brian Gonsalves closed out the period's scoring with his 21 marker of the season for the Thoroughbreds, now 8-3.

Aronow's 25th and Duque's 34th tally of the year knotted the game at 11-11 with 4:37 elapsed in the final period.

A pair of goals from Jimmy Gibbons and the game's closing goal from Tim Blue, all three unassisted, were the ultimate deciders.

Aronow, Cicchetti and freshman Tristan McMahon (Farmingville, N.Y.) each scored two goals for WestConn.

Gonsalves led Skidmore with a hat-trick on Wednesday.

Junior Brendan Grove (Cheshire, Conn.) made six saves but was replaced by freshman Nicholas Elarde (Lake Grove, N.Y.) for the second half.  Elarde made four stops, but was charged with the loss after Skidmore broke the late-game deadlock.

Colin Kuester earned the victory for the Thoroughbreds after making nine saves.

The Wolves will play host to intra-state rival Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday, April 11.  Face-off is planned for 7 pm a the Westside Athletic Complex.
