Box Score MANSFIELD, Conn. - The senior duo of
Benjamin Hawthorne (Manorville, N.Y.) and
Stephen Cicchetti (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) combined for eight points to lift the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team to a 12-10 road win at cross-state archrival Eastern Connecticut on Tuesday night.
With the win, the Wolves improved to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in league play, while the Warriors dropped to 4-8 and 1-3.
The winners came out of the gate firing on all cylinders as they erupted for a 4-0 run. Sophomore attackman
Julian Duque (Mastic, N.Y) opened the scoring one minute into the contest with his 35th goal of the campaign. Hawthorne capped the spurt with his 15th of the year off a feed from junior middie
Joseph Boss (Holbrook, N.Y.).
However, the hosts rallied and evened the count at 5-5 midway thru the second quarter when Warren Channing found the back of the net. WestConn retaliated quickly when senior attackman
Trey Aronow (Holbrook, N.Y.) tickled the twine, giving the Wolves a 6-5 lead at the break.
Cicchetti pierced the net to begin the third stanza. He would connect with the rope again with less than three minutes remaining in the quarter, sending the Wolves into the final period of regulation with a 9-7 advantage.
He notched the hat trick to begin the fourth to make it 10-7. The Warriors quickly countered and the squads would exchange goals the rest of the way, setting the final tally at 12-10.
Senior goalkeeper
Brendan Grove (Cheshire, Conn.) was stellar once again, finishing with 14 saves. Eastern's netminder Nick Collazo was equally impressive as he also recorded 14 stops.
WestConn will look to continue moving in a positive direction when they head to Southern Maine in another LEC tilt on Saturday at Noon.
