GORHAM, Me. - Juniors
Vicky Gracy (Bethel, Conn.) and
Colleen Crotty (Peabody, Mass.) tallied three goals and one assist apiece to lift the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team to an 11-8 victory at Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Wolves improved to 14-2 overall and 7-0 in league play, capturing their third-straight Little East Conference regular season crown and the top seed in the upcoming LEC Postseason Tournament. They receive a first round bye for the quarterfinal round to be played on Tuesday and will host a semifinal matchup on Thursday at 4 p.m. The championship game is slated for Saturday.
Senior attacker
Alexa Riggio (Massapequa, N.Y.) and rookie midfielder
Faye Junge (Centerport, N.Y.) each chipped in with a pair of goals for the visitors, while senior attacker
Dominique DeMarsico (Danbury, Conn.) added a goal and two helpers. Four different players netted two goals apiece for the Huskies.
WestConn pierced the scoring column when Gracy netted her team-leading 56th of the campaign less than three minutes into play. The squads exchanged goals the rest of the first quarter. The scored would be deadlocked at 3-3 heading into the second.
Southern Maine seized its first lead when Maddie Kinney found the back of the net to make it 4-3. However, the Wolves responded with goals from Crotty and DeMarsico to regain a 5-4 advantage. It marked DeMarsico's 50th scoring strike of the season. The Huskies answered to knot the score at 5-5 at halftime.
The winners would net the lone goal of the third stanza when Riggio took a nifty feed from Junge and connected for her 32nd of the year. It began a five-goal Wolves run that extended into the fourth quarter. Gracy canned back-to-back goals to open up the final quarter, good for her 57th and 58th of the season. Riggio rounded out the spurt with her 33rd, giving the Wolves a 10-5 lead with just under six minutes left on the clock. The Huskies would not recover from the flurry.Â
Senior goalkeeper
