DANBURY, Conn. - Senior attacker
Dominique DeMarsico (Danbury, Conn.) and junior midfielder
Vicky Gracy (Bethel, Conn.) each tallied four goals and two assists to propel the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team to a 17-11 victory over visiting non-conference foe John Carroll University on Wednesday night at the Westside Athletic Complex.
Senior middie
Colleen Foley (Kingston, Mass.) also racked up four goals, while classmate
Alexa Riggio (Massapequa, N.Y.) and rookie
Faye Junge (Centerport, N.Y.) added two scoring strikes apiece for the hosts.Â
Four players notched a pair of goals apiece for the visitors. Senior midfielder Olivia Gerlach (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was one of them as she fired home her team-leading 10th goal of the season.
The Blue Streaks raced out to an early 3-1 lead. Senior middie Lainey Donalson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) wrapped up the spurt with her first goal of the campaign.
However, the Wolves would come roaring back as they responded with a six-goal flurry. Gracy would knot the count at 3-3 when she bounced home a righty rocket before the hosts took their first lead of the contest when Foley connected with the top-corner of the twine.Â
WestConn continued to pour it on in the second quarter. DeMarsico raced around the cage and her defender to blast a shot just underneath the crossbar to make it 6-3. She added a free-position tally later in the stanza, widening the gap to 9-5 at halftime.
John Carroll battled back and shrank the deficit to 13-9 when Donalson netted her second of the game early in the fourth. But WestConn managed the clock and their possessions well the rest of the way. Riggio scored both her goals in the waning minutes as the Wolves escaped with the victory.
Senior
Anna Schipf (Babylon, N.Y.) earned the win as she split time between the pipes with junior
Molly Bresnahan (Groton, Conn.) They combined for nine saves.
The winners improved to 3-1 overall while the visitors dropped to 0-5. WestConn returns to action for their Spring Break trip in Mesa, Arizona beginning with a neutral matchup against Wisconsin - River Falls on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
