DANBURY, Conn. - Despite three goals and one assist from senior attackman
Benjamin Hawthorne (Manorville, N.Y.), the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team fell to visiting non-conference opponent Connecticut College, 10-6, on Tuesday night at the Westside Athletic Complex.
Classmate attackman
Trey Aronow (Holbrook, N.Y.) chipped in with a goal and two helpers, while rookie midfielder
Tristan McMahon (Farmingville, N.Y.) added a goal and one assist for the Wolves. Senior netminder
Brendan Grove (Cheshire, Conn.) kept the hosts in contention with some stellar stops between the pipes. He finished with 12 saves. The visitors held the advantage in shots, 42-27.Â
Sophomore attackman Aidan McAvoy (Charlotte, N.C.) paced the Camels with two scoring strikes while dishing out an assist. Sophomore Bobby Chang (South Salem, N.Y.) and rookie Liam Horkan (Malden, Mass.) each contributed a pair of goals.
Things got off to a fast and furious start as seven goals were scored in the first quarter. Aronow drew first blood with his 21st marker of the campaign before the visitors countered with a three-goal spurt. Hawthorne banged home a man-up tally before closing out the period with his 11th of the year, cutting the deficit to 4-3.
The contest slowed down dramatically in the second as both squads turned up the defensive pressure. The teams exchanged goals as WestConn sophomore midfielder
Matt Sweeney (Rocky Point, N.Y.) tickled the twine before Chang canned his ninth of the season. The Camels would hold a slim 5-4 lead at the break.
The visitors seized the momentum in the third as they netted three of the four goals to head into the fourth with an 8-5 advantage. Horkan and Chang scored early in the fourth, widening the gap to 10-5. The Camels defense continued to play tough the rest of the way. WestConn rounded out the count at 10-6 late in the game when Aronow found Hawthorne alone in front for the hat trick.
With the loss, the Wolves dropped to 7-2 overall while Conn. College evened its record at 3-3. The Camels head to Colby College on Saturday at Noon, while WestConn hosts LEC foe Plymouth State at 11 a.m.
