NEW LONDON, Conn. - Senior attacker
Dominique DeMarsico (Danbury, Conn.) tallied three goals and one assist including the game-winner in overtime, propelling the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse squad to a 10-9 victory at non-conference opponent Coast Guard on Wednesday night.
Junior midfielder
Vicky Gracy (Bethel, Conn.) added two scoring strikes and one helper, while classmate
Colleen Crotty (Peabody, Mass) and senior
Alexa Riggio (Massapequa, N.Y.) chipped in with two goals apiece. Rookie attacker
Gina Giambald (East Meadow, N.Y) also connected with the twine for the Wolves.
Abby McAllister led the Bears with a hat trick and an assist, while Caitlyn Coates and Addy Bass each added a pair of goals.
The Wolves held a narrow advantage in shots, 31-30. However, they forced the hosts into 18 turnovers while coughing the ball up just nine times.
The visitors opened the game with a 5-2 run to conclude the first quarter. DeMarsico got things started with an unassisted tally before Riggio netted back-to-back goals to finish off the spurt.
The Bears chipped away at the advantage thru the second and third stanzas. Coates fired a shot into the twine to knot the count at 7-7 early in the third.
However, DeMarsico and Giambald responded with a pair of unassisted goals less than three minutes apart, giving WestConn a 9-7 lead late in the period. The Bears would score, slicing it to 9-8 heading into the fourth.
Coates took a feed from Brenda Anderson and notched the equalizing lone scoring strike with five minutes left in regulation, deadlocking the count at 9-9. Coast Guard netminder Devon McCue made three saves in the waning minutes, forcing the extra session.
Possession changed hands several times in overtime and things seemed to be heading in Coast Guard's favor as they drew a yellow card. But WestConn regained the rock and DeMarsico canned her 22nd goal of the season, down a player, sending the Wolves back home with the win.
WestConn senior goalkeeper
Anna Schipf (Babylon, N.Y.) earned the win en route to stopping 11 shots, while Bears netminders Maici Mintchwarner and McCue split time and combined for 15 saves.
With the win, the Wolves improved to 7-1 overall while Coast Guard dropped to 4-4. WestConn gets to take a breath before they host Rhode Island College on Saturday, April 1 at 2 p.m.
