DANBURY, Conn. - The combination of
Trey Aronow (Holbrook, N.Y.) and
Julian Duque (Mastic, N.Y.) scored a dozen goals and three assists. The duo hooked up, Duque from Aronow, for the game-winning tally 53 second into overtime to lift the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team to a come-from-behind 16-15 victory over visiting United State Merchant Marine Academy at the Westside Athletic Complex.
The game-winning man-up goal came following a crafty behind-the-head pass from Aronow to Duque on the right side of the cage. The sharp-shooting righty rifled the ball in the top right corner of the goal and the celebration began in the center of the box.
Duque finished with five goals and leads the 4-0 Wolves with 18 markers on the young season. Aronow, who scored seven goals and handed out three of his team's eight dimes on Thursday, follows closely behind Duque with 16 goals and eight assists for 24 total points.
WestConn fell behind, 15-12 when Jack DeTommaso scored with 5:08 left in regulation. His goal closed out a stretch of five straight goals by the visitors, from the closing second of the third period and catepalted the Mariners ahead after trailing 12-10.
Joining Duque and Aronow in the scoring column for the winners were
Tristan McMahon (Farmingville, N.Y.), fresh off his second Little East Conference Rookie of the Week honor, who scored twice.
Jonathan Russack-Baker (Groton, Conn.) and
Donald Schaumloffel (Wantagh, N.Y.) added goals for the winners.
The Mariners had three players score a hat trick or better with William Badeer scoring four goals and assisting on three others. Three of his goals came during his team's latest comeback in the final stanza.
Michael Emerick and Carter Hall each scored three goals while DeTommaso finished with a pair of tallies.
Junior goalie
Brendan Grove (Cheshire, Conn.) earned the win in net for WestConn after making nine saves. Grove too was honored for the second-straight week by the LEC as the top net minder.
Senior twine tender Samuel Stephenson made 10 stops for USMMA.
WestConn returrns to action on Saturday, March 11 when it takes on Wentworth in North Davenport, Florida. Game time is scheduled for 1 pm.
The Mariners play host to Salve Regina University this Saturday. Face-off is slated for 3 pm in King's Point on Long Island.
