FORT MYERS, Fla. -
Hunter Loomis and
Josef Rosa each drove in two runs, but the Western Connecticut State University baseball suffered a hard-luck 7-6 loss to Defiance College on Thursday morning.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, lead-off hitter Mitchell Roever worked out a walk off WestConn starter
Zach Kugler. After the Yellow Jackets loaded the bases, reliever
Sam Capetanakis uncorked a wild pitch and Roever scampered home with the game-winning run.
The Wolves worked their way back from a first-inning four-run deficit and took a 6-4 lead in the top half of the eight inning.
Loomis, who went 3-for-4 and scored a runs, collected his two RBI in that frame, singling home
Jake Montas and
Joe Gambino. Gambino reached on an error to lead off the eight inning then moved around to third base following Montas's double down the left-field line.
Definance knotted the game in bottom half of the frame with RBI singles from Austin Horning and Kolbe Vanderlee.
Anthony Piazza went 1-for-4 and drove in a run for WestConn.
Capetanakis drops to 0-2 on the season while Tyler Sickmiller improves to 1-0 after coming on for the Buzz to start the ninth inning.
WestConn, now 3-12, wrap up the southern trip with a single game against Skidmore College on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 12 noon.
