DANBURY, Conn. - Junior midfielder
Vicky Gracy (Bethel, Conn.) racked up four goals and three assists to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse squad to a 16-8 victory over visiting non-conference opponent Vassar College on a chilly Wednesday night at the Westside Athletic Complex.
Senior midfielder
Colleen Foley (Kingston, Mass.) added four goals while classmate attacker
Dominique DeMarsico (Danbury, Conn.) chipped in with a hat trick and one assist.
Senior midfielder Maddy Kretten (Madison, N.J.) paced the Brewers with two and a helper. Senior attacker Annie Uyeki (North Haven, Conn.) and sophomore middie Emma Torkelson (Madison, N.J.) each contributed a pair of goals.
The Wolves converted 4-of-5 free position shots, while the visitors went 3-for-9. The hosts forced 22 turnovers while committing just 15.
WestConn led from wire-to-wire as they opened the game with a 3-0 spurt. Gracy tallied a pair before Foley canned her first marker of the season midway thru the first quarter. The Wolves would take a 5-2 lead into the second.
The winners continued to pile it on with another three goal run. Foley completed the hat trick before junior attacker
Colleen Crotty (Peabody, Mass.) tickled the twine for her first goal of the campaign, stretching the advantage to 8-4 headed into halftime.
It was a similar story in the second half. The Wolves put together a five-goal run that began with 4:06 remaining in the third and carried into the final stanza. DeMarsico wrapped up the barrage with her team-leading seventh goal of the slate.
WestConn senior goalkeeper
Anna Schipf (Babylon, N.Y.) was stellar in net, finishing with nine saves to earn the win. Two Vassar goalies split time between the iron and recorded a combined six stops.
With the victory, the Wolves improved to 2-0 overall while Vassar dropped to 1-1. WestConn returns to action on Saturday when they host non-league foe Worcester State University at 1 p.m. - weather pending.
