DANBURY, Conn. - Graduate student
Katelyn Fanning (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) and junior
Nicole Vivian (New Milford, Conn.) each scored a dozen points, but the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team dropped a 72-51 decision to visiting Keene State College at Feldman Arena on Senior Day on Saturday.
The Wolves have now lost five in a row and hold a 12-9 overall and 5-8 record in the Little East Conference. They have now slipped to sixth place in the conference with three league tilts remaining.
The Owls improved to 5-14 overall and 3-10 in the conference. They were led by a trio of players in double figures. Kenzie Durnford (Katy, Tex.) led the way with 18 points while Valerie Luizzi (Colchester, Conn.) and Lilly Krysinski (North Grosvenordale, Conn.) added 15 and 13 points, respectively for the winners.
WestConn secured its only lead of the afternoon when Fanning his a short jumper in the lane, 19 seconds into the contest. Â
KSC led the rest of the way. The visitors scored 10 of the first quarter's final 14 points to hold an 18-10 advantage after 10 minutes. Krysincski connected on a bucket with 12 seconds remaining in the first stanza.
After trailing by double digits for much of the rest of the game, Vivian buried a lay-up with 2:26 remaining in the third period to bring the Wolves within nine points, 45-36. That would be the closest they would get moving forward.
Keene State's Rylee Burgess (Rutland, Vt.) led all players 11 rebounds while
Gabrielle Franks (Madison, Conn.) and Fanning hauled in eight and seven caroms, respectively, for WestConn.
Prior to the start of the game, the careers of
Jasmine Caldwell (Mount Vernon, N.Y.),
Julia Misner (Meriden, Conn.),
Ashley Rilley (Orangeburg, N.Y.) and team manager
Madison Chatman (Meriden, Conn.) were celebrated in front of the early-arriving crowd.
WestConn will play host to Cobleskill College on Monday, February 6 in a make-up non-conference affair. Game time is slated for 5 pm. Â
Keene State plays host to University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Wednesday night at 5:30 pm, in southern New Hampshire.
