CASTLETON, Vt. - Despite 20 points and a game-high 11 rebounds from graduate student forward
Katelyn Fanning (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.), the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team fell at Castleton University, 62-47, in a Little East Conference contest on Saturday.
After a stellar start to the season, it marked the sixth straight loss for the Wolves, who moved to 12-10 overall and 5-9 in league play. The Spartans improved to 16-7 and 9-5.
Elise Magro paced the hosts, pouring in a game-high 27 points while Liz Bailey tallied a double-double of her own with 24 points and 10 boards.Â
Both squads shot nearly identical percentages from the field for the game. Furthermore, they both connected on over 80 percent of their respective free throw attempts. However, the Spartans earned more trips to the stripe, sinking 13 shots, while WestConn drained just five.Â
The Spartans were also able to outscore the Wolves with fast break points, 12-2. That proved to be the difference in the matchup.Â
WestConn appeared to be headed in a positive direction, beginning the game with an 11-3 surge. Senior forward
Ashley Rilley (Orangeburg, N.Y.) capped the spurt with a midrange jumper. It would be the visitors largest lead.
The Spartans retaliated with a run of their own to capture a 16-15 lead to end the opening quarter.
The hosts put the game out of reach with a 22-3 second quarter run. Gwyn Tatton drilled a three-pointer to make it 38-18. Fanning countered with a pair of layups, trimming the deficit to 38-22 at halftime.
The visitors sliced it to a 12-point margin the third stanza but couldn't close the gap any further.Â
WestConn will look to snap the skid when they host LEC archrival Eastern Connecticut on Wednesday at 5 p.m. The Wolves will be seeking to avenge a 58-47 loss suffered in Willimantic earlier this season.Â
