DANBURY, Conn. - Senior
Kendall Robinson (Bellport, N.Y.) and junior
Jalen Jackson (Brick, N.J.) to lead six players in double figures and the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team went onto a 94-75 victory in the Little East Conference Championships semi-final meeting with sixth seed University of Massachusetts Dartmouth at Feldman Arena on Thursday night.
Robinson finished with a game-high 16 points while Jackson added 14 points for the winners.
Keeshawn Jones (Middletown, N.Y.) and
Jaheim Young (Brooklyn, N.Y.) poured in 11 points each while
Jordon Brown (Danbury, Conn.) joined
James Rhodes (Tarrytown, N.Y.) with 10 points apiece.
Robinson also collected a game-high six rebounds and blocked four Corsairs' shots.
WestConn, now 22-4, will face Keene State College, the leagues regular-season champion and tournament top seed, on Saturday, February 25 in southern New Hampshire. The Owls, 25-1, defeated third-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University, 83-61 in the LEC's other semi-final dual. Game time is scheduled for 1 pm on Saturday.
During the regular season, KSC, which is currently ranked fifth in the the D3hoops.com national Top 25, defeated the Wolves twice. Back on January 7, it took overtime at Spaulding Gym for the Owls to pull out a 71-68 victory. In front of a crowd of over 1,000 on February 4, WestConn fell to Keene State, 92-76.
In the first half, the Wolves used a balanced scoring attack with nine players lighting up the scoreboard on their way to a 50-28 advantage at intermission. Jackson scored 12 of his 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field. He connected on two of his three attempts from beyond the arc. The point sharing continued as all five starters netted at least 10 points.
Over the first 20 minutes, WestConn led the entire way, but the Corsairs, which trailed by seven points, 14-7 in the early going, pulled with a duce, 18-16 following a layup from Jackson Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) with 11:57 remaining before the break.
In fewer than three minutes, the hosts regained its composure and built its lead up to 10 points, 29-19, following a bank shot from Jackson at the 9:00 mark of the first stanza. Their lead remained in double digits throughout the rest of the half and the lead climbed to over 30 points during a stretch in the second half.
UMD, which ends its season at 9-18, was led by four players in double figures in the scoring column. Dhalyn Sander-Dyer's (Worcester, Mass.) 15 points led the way for the Corsairs while Zancan (14), Nic Boyd (Portland, Ore.) (13), and John Marcille 12 followed closely behind.
The Wolves will be seeking the school's seventh league crown on Saturday while the Owls will shoot for the program's sixth title.
WestConn last captured the LEC post-season title and the automatic berth in the NCAA Division III National Championships in 2020. It defeated the Corsairs, 88-75 in the finals three years ago.
Keene State edged UMass Dartmouth, 71-69 in overtime last season for last banner winning showing. The Owls have won four of their five titles since 2015. During that same stretch, they have been runner-up after falling in the championship affair.
