DANBURY, Conn. - Senior attackman
Trey Aronow (Holbrook, N.Y.) racked up three goals and a game-high three assists to propel the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team to a 16-7 victory over visiting non-league foe Salve Regina University on Tuesday night at the Westside Athletic Complex. Wolves' junior netminder
Brendan Grove (Cheshire, Conn.) was equally impressive, disheartening the Seahawks with 14 stellar saves.
Senior attackman
Benjamin Hawthorne (Manorville, N.Y.) added two scoring strikes and a trio of assists, while rookie
Tristan McMahon (Farmingville, N.Y.) finished with a hat trick and a helper. Reigning LEC Offensive Player of the Week
Julian Duque (Mastic, N.Y) also chipped in with three goals for the hosts.
Junior midfielder Max Beauchamp (Saunderstown, R.I.) led Salve Regina with two goals and a dime, while classmate attackman Liam Cooney (Portsmouth, R.I.) tallied a goal and an assist.
The visitors jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as Beauchamp netted his fourth of the season to open the game. The Wolves answered midway thru the first quarter when they reeled off three-straight. Hawthorne rounded out the spurt with his first of the contest. The count would be deadlocked at 4-4 to end the stanza.
WestConn notched six of the seven total goals in the second quarter. Aronow ignited the run with his seventh of the season. McMahon - who earned LEC Rookie of the Week honors earlier this week - finished off the flurry with his third of the game, good for his fifth of the year. The hosts would hold a 9-5 advantage at halftime.
The pace slowed in the third before the Wolves put the finishing touches on the contest with a 6-0 fourth quarter run. Aronow and sophomore midfielder
Peter Traina (East Moriches, N.Y.) each tallied a pair during the spurt, while Duque and senior attackman
Donald Schaumloffel (Wantagh, N.Y) added scores to close it out.
With the win, WestConn improved to 3-0 overall while the Seahawks dropped to 1-1. Grove - yet another LEC honoree this week - improved to 3-0, while a pair of Salve Regina players split time in between the pipes, finishing with six saves combined.
The Wolves return to action when they square off against visiting U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at the WAC on March 1 at 4 p.m.
