Fanning And Franks Score Double Figures In Loss To ECSU

DANBURY, Conn. - Graduate student Katelyn Fanning (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) and junior Gabrielle Franks (Madison, Conn.) scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, but Little East Conference front runner Eastern Connecticut State University held on for a 62-52 women's basketball victory at Feldman Arena on Wednesday night.

The Wolves drop to 12-12 overall and 5-10 in the Little East Conference.

The Warriors improved to 21-4 overall and guaranteed at least a tie atop the league standings and the co-regular season championship, with Rhode Island College.  The visitors are 15-1 in the league and closed out their regular season on Wednesday.  RIC, which defeated University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 76-56 on Wednesday, sit at 21-3 overall and 14-1 in the LEC.  The Anchorwomen travel to Plymouth State University on Saturday with a chance to move into a deadlock with ECSU.

Senior forward Anna Barry (Andover, Conn.) led the winners with 23 points, 14 rebounds and fell one blocked shot short of a power triple double with nine rejections.  Julie Keckler (Trumbull, Conn.) was the only other Eastern Connecticut player to score in double figures as she finished with 11 points.  She tied Danielle O'Brien with a game-best four assists.

Fanning led WestConn with seven boards and joined the ECSU duo with a game-high four handouts.

The Wolves led in the early going before Keckler canned a pair of free throws to put the Warriors up, 8-7 with 6:23 remaining in the first quarter.

Shortly after the go-ahead freebies, the game was halted for nearly 40 minutes due to a medical emergency.  When play resumed, Eastern continued on its 10-point run and lead 14-7, following a bucket in the paint from Mariah Dunn (Meriden, Conn.) at the 4:09 point of the first stanza.

Frank banked in a short jumper, with 4:32 left in the second period to bring the hosts with one point, 28-27.

A pair of free throws from Fanning, 41 seconds after intermission knotted the game at 31-31.

The Warriors took over from there and scored 18 of the games next 19 points.  Kya Moyo (Middletown, Conn.) nailed a jumper to give the winners a 49-32 advantage with 2:42 still left in the third quarter.  Her team would hold a double-figure lead the rest of the way.

WestConn travels to University of Southern Maine on Saturday, February 18 at 1 pm.  The winner between the Wolves and the Huskies will break a current three-way tie for the final two spots in the LEC Championships and move onto be either the fifth or sixth seeds.  Only six of the nine LEC squads earns a spot in the post-season challenge.
