Ashley Rilley (Orangebury, N.Y.), the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team fell at the University of Southern Maine, 71-54, in a Little East Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Hill Gym.
With the loss, the Wolves' season came to an end at 12-12 overall and 5-11 in league play, while the Huskies captured the No. 5 seed in the upcoming LEC Postseason Tournament, improving to 8-17 and 6-10. Eastern Connecticut earned the top seed at 21-4 and 15-1.Â
The contest was close in the early stages as WestConn took an 18-13 advantage when senior guard
Julia Misner (Meriden, Conn.) hit a layup midway thru the second quarter. However, the hosts retaliated and seized a 37-35 lead when Franny Ramsdell knocked down a midrange jumper.
The Huskies widened the gap to 10 points in the third when Vanessa Vaughan sank a pair of free throws. WestConn would not recover from the run the rest of the way.
Southern Maine extended the advantage to as much as 19 points as they cruised the rest of the way. Ramsdell finished with a game-high 26 points, while Amy Fleming and Tamrah Gould added 11 and 10, respectively.
The Wolves started the season strong. They will seek to continue moving in a positive direction during the 2023-2024 slate.Â
