BOSTON, Mass. - Despite a team-high 12 points from senior guard
Nicole Vivian (New Milford, Conn.), the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team fell at host UMass Boston, 61-48, in a Little East Conference matchup on Wednesday night.
With the loss, the Wolves dropped to 1-7 overall and 0-2 in league play, while the Beacons improved to 3-4 and 1-1.
Three players netted double figures in scoring for UMass Boston. Sophie Bradbury led the way with a game-high 16 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the floor, while Tatiannah Fevry and Alexah Potter hit for 12 and 11, respectively.
The hosts controlled the tempo as the Beacons's bench outscored the WestConn reserves, 29-15. They also managed to outmuscle the Wolves on the glass, 46-29.
The visitors took an 11-10 lead into the second quarter after Vivian buried a trifecta courtesy of a feed from sophomore guard
Malaysia Dingle (Holbrook, Mass.). However, the Beacons responded with a run to capture a 28-23 lead at halftime.
The Wolves trimmed it to a two-point deficit in the third when junior guard
Francesca Foster (Mystic, Conn.) knocked down a shot from beyond-the-arc. But UMass Boston answered with another surge to grab a 44-34 lead heading into the fourth. The hosts would maintain the advantage the rest of the way as WestConn could not string together a rally.
The Wolves will seek to pierce the win column when they travel to conference foe Vermont State University Castleton on Saturday at 2 p.m.
