DANBURY, Conn. - The second-seeded Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team tied its season-high for goals scored in a game as they downed visiting third-seeded Keene State College, 7-2, in the semifinal round of the Little East Conference Championship Tournament on Thursday night at the Westside Athletic Complex. Junior forward
Suzana Imetovski (Seymour, Conn.) led the Wolves with two goals and an assist, while senior forward
Myah Croze (Bristol, Conn) canned two scoring strikes.
With the win, WestConn improved to 10-7-4 overall, while Keene State saw its season come to an end at 10-4-7. The Owls had not allowed more than three goals in a game all year and the seven WestConn markers tied a Little East Tournament record. The Wolves head to unbeaten No. 1 seed Southern Maine on Saturday and will be seeking to avenge a narrow regular season loss less than two weeks ago. The Huskies downed No. 4 seed UMass Boston in the other semifinal matchup Thursday night.Â
The hosts came out the gate strong and would not look back. They put forth heavy pressure in the opening 15 minutes of the contest nearly scoring twice but a Croze shot was stopped just before crossing the goal line and a blast from sophomore
Sophia Onek (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) just missed the left post.
The Wolves eventually broke the ice when Croze took a nifty pass from Imetovski and ripped a shot into the top corner at 16:11. Shortly thereafter, Onek gathered a loose ball in the box and chipped it to Imetovski who connected with the twine, widening the advantage to 2-0. Croze added her team-leading 19th goal of the season less than two minutes into the second half and Imetovski added her 9th of the year less than a minute later, stretching it to 4-0. Junior midfielder
Adriana Alfano (New Milford, Conn.) then booted a penalty kick attempt just underneath the crossbar, extending the lead to 5-0.
Keene State finally got on the board in the 67th minute of play when rookie midfielder Emily O'Connell (Plymouth, Mass.) found the back of the net for her third of the campaign. WestConn countered with goals from junior midfielder
Mackenzie Sam (Brookfield, Conn.) and rookie forward
Jordan Breier (Huntington, N.Y.) before Keene sophomore Joclynn Tyler (Darien, Conn.) tickled the twine, rounding the scoring out at 7-2.
