WestConn Football Hammers Plymouth State On Homecoming

DANBURY, Conn. - Keion Jones (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) threw for 323 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a 55-20 win over the visiting Plymouth State University Panthers in Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) football action this afternoon at Westside Complex.  WestConn improves to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in the MASCAC, while the Panthers drop to 0-5 overall and 0-4 in the league.  The Wolves will visit conference rival Framingham State next on Saturday, October 1 at noon.

WestConn scored early and often with eight touchdowns, but the Panthers got on the board 2:43 into the first quarter on a two-yard touchdown run by Willie Lombard.  WestConn, which scored over 50 points for the second game in a row, answered just before the end of the first quarter on a four-yard run to the end zone by Chad Blaszky (Selden, N.Y.) but the Wolves missed the PAT and were own, 7-6, at the first break.  Jones found senior WR Zach Soriano (Middle Island, N.Y.) for a 41-yard pass down the left sideline to set up the score.

WestConn broke out in the second quarter, scoring three touchdowns to lead, 27-7, at halftime.  The Wolves started their first drive of the quarter at their own 16-yard line but Jones found Soriano again, this time for a 54-yard pass to the Panther three-yard line, and Blaszky finished the drive with the second of his four touchdowns in the game.  The WestConn graduate student who became the school's all-time leading rusher in last week's win over UMass-Dartmouth, scored on two one-yard plunges in the second frame and Jones tossed a scoring strike to Soriano frm 19 yards away with 27 seconds left in the first half.  Sophomore Nick Simmons (Middletown, N.Y.) recovered a fumbled Panther snap to set up the last score for the Wolves.

Lombard opened the third quarter with a 65-yard touchdown run for the Panthers just 18 seconds after intermission, but Blaszky responded with a nine-yard touchdown run with 9:58 on the clock.  Jones added a 43-yard touchdown toss to junior WR Julian Ferguson (Enfield, Conn.), followed by a 60-yard interception return to paydirt by Wolves' sophomore DB Mike DeFelice (New Windsor, N.Y.).  Jones and Plymouth State QB Braden Lynn each added one more touchdown pass in the final two minutes of the third, as the teams combined for 40 points in the quarter.  WestConn entered the fourth frame with a 55-20 lead and neither team scored in the final 15 minutes.

WestConn nearly doubled Plymouth State offensively with 527 yards of total offense to 266 for the visitors.  Jones finished 18-for-24 passing including seven grabs by Soriano for 145 yards and five more by Ferguson for 133 yards.  Blaszky ran 20 times for 101 yards, while Lombard rushed for a game-high 68 yards and two scores and Kyle Baker caught a 68-yard touchdown pass for Plymouth State.  Defensively, WestConn's Nosa Uzamere (Hempstead, N.Y.) led all tacklers with nine (eight solo), while Ambrose Richard (Wall, N.J.) added five hits and both had a tackle for loss.  Seamus Murphy paced Plymouth State with seven tackles and Evan Wilson had six tackles and three tackles for loss for the Panthers.
