WestConn Men's Soccer Bumps Wesleyan For Sixth Win In A Row

DANBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University Wolves collected their sixth victory in a row with a 3-1 win over the visiting Wesleyan University Cardinals in men's soccer action this evening at Westside Complex. WestConn improves to 9-1-2 and extends its unbeaten streak to 10 games (8-0-2) with a Little East Conference game against Southern Maine up next on Saturday at noon.  Wesleyan, which played 43:39 of the game down a player due to an early red card, drops to 3-3-3 and sees its winless streak extended to five games (0-2-3).

WestConn nearly scored in the second minute when junior midfielder Kadin Talho (Waterbury, Conn.) headed the ball on a corner kick and its was saved by Wesleyan goalie Josh Nadison but then grabbed in play by a Cardinal who was issued a red card 1:21 into the game.  Nadison came up big again for the visitors, stopping Talho on the ensuing penalty kick. The game remained scoreless deep into the first half until senior captain Kent Eannarino (Brookfield, Conn.) knifed his way through the Cardinal defense and shot past Nadison from the right wing in the 28th minute.

In the second half, Talho got a second chance to convert a penalty kick and beat Cardinal backstop Mathis Blanc, who had just entered the game after intermission, with low shot to the goalie's right to make the score, 2-0, in the 48th minute.  Wesleyan increased its offensive pressure late in the second half, forcing WestConn sophomore goalkeeper Zachary Benson (Milford, Conn.) to make two stellar saves in the 85th minute on a blast from the right flank by Chris Porte and a header by Evan O'Brien moments later.

The Cardinals got on the board in the 88th minute when Porte got his head on a loose ball off a corner kick and knocked it into the net, converting on an assist by Zack Burd.  Wesleyan was awarded a direct kick from 40 yards out with 12 seconds left and put all 10 of its players in the box, but the Wolves knocked the ball away and WestConn's Marc Kyriakidis (Pleasantville, N.Y.) landed his long shot into the goal with just one second remaining.  Rookie Ian Mounts (Middletown, Conn.) assisted on the play, making the final score, 3-1.  Benson improved to 5-0-1 with five saves while the Cardinal keepers combined for three.
