Vigo Scores But Men's Soccer Downed at UMass Boston

BOSTON, Mass. - Sophomore forward Maximus Vigo (Canton, Mich.) netted his fifth goal of the season but it wasn't enough as the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team was downed at Little East Conference opponent UMass Boston, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon. The Wolves took an early 1-0 lead, however, the Beacons countered with a pair tallies to earn the comeback win.

With the loss, WestConn dropped to 11-3-2 overall and 4-1-1 in league play, while UMass Boston improved to 10-3-2 and 4-1-1.

The hosts finished ahead in shots, 14-8, and corner kicks, 5-2. Wolves sophomore goalkeeper Zachary Benson (Milford, Conn.) registered a pair of saves while taking the tough loss, while Qasim El-Ashkar turned aside a single shot and captured the victory for the Beacons.

The Wolves broke the ice just 5:05 into the contest on a rush downfield. Senior midfielder Kent Eannarino (Brookfield, Conn.) took a pass and then fired a cross into the box where Vigo nudged it into the top-corner of the net, giving the visitors an early advantage.

The Beacons then started their rally. Ryan Lima got them on the board with the equalizer off a pretty pass from Marron Acheampong in the 29th minute of play, knotting the count at 1-1 at halftime. The hosts then pulled ahead when Gabriel Meireles fired a sharp-angled shot just inside the near post. Benson got a hand on the ball but it still managed to sneak across the goal line, giving the Beacons a 2-1 lead with 25 minutes remaining. WestConn had chances but a trio of headers could not find the twine in the final minutes.

The Wolves will look to rebound when they head to non-conference foe Williams College on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
