Katelyn Fanning Drops 23 In Loss To UMass Dartmouth

DANBURY, Conn. - Graduate student Katelyn Fanning (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed a game-best 12 rebounds, but the Western Connecticut State University 10-game win streak ended following Monday's 75-60 loss to visiting University of Massachusetts Dartmouth at Feldman Arena.

Junior guard Nicole Vivian (New Milford, Conn.) and senior Ashley Rilley (Orangeburg, N.Y.) tossed in 12 and 10 points, respectively for the 10-2 Wolves.  WestConn drops to 3-1 in the Little East Conference.

UMass Dartmouth, which improves to 8-6 overall and 4-1 in the league, enjoyed a quartet of players in double figures.  Kaylin Zalewski (Johnston, R.I.) led the way for the Corsairs with 19 points while three other starters, Jordan Moretti, Jessica Carroll and Teja Andrews added 16, 15, and 14 points, respectively for the winners.

The Corsairs led from the tip and raced out to a 8-0 lead when Andrews drove the lane for two points with 2:35 elapsed in the contest.

After Zalweski buried a pair of free throws for a 12-2 advantage with 5:21 remaining in the first quarter, the Wolves cut their deficit in half, 16-11, following a short jumper from Vivian with 1:52 left in the first stanza.

A bucket in the lane by Fanning with 21 seconds remaining before intermission brought WestConn within one point, 28-27 and both clubs went into intermission that way.

UMass Dartmouth outscored the Wolves, 30-16 in the third period.  The run was capped off by a three-pointer from Morretti with 38 second left in the frame to give the visitors a 58-43 lead heading into the final period and would maintain a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

WestConn returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to LEC front runner Rhode Island College.  Game time against the Anchorwomen is set for 4 pm in Providence.

The Corsairs travel to UMass Boston to face the Beacons on Wednesday.  Tip-off is slated for 5:30 pm.
