Box Score KEENE, N.H. - Junior guard
Nicole Vivian (New Milford, Conn.) drained a three-pointer from the left wing at the buzzer to lift the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team to a thrilling 43-40 victory at Keene State College in a Little East Conference tilt on Saturday afternoon.
Vivian finished with a team-high nine points, while five other players notched six apiece for the visitors. Graduate student
Katelyn Fanning (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) added a game-high nine rebounds.
Aryanna Murray paced the hosts with 12 points to go along with five assists. She was the only player in the contest to reach double figures.
It was a defensive battle throughout. WestConn finished shooting 17-of-50 (34 percent) from the floor, while Keene managed just 16-of-54 (30 percent).
After a tight first half, the Wolves raced out to a 24-14 advantage - its largest of the game - with 7:45 left in the third quarter. Rookie guard
Malaysia Dingle (Brockton, Mass.) capped the flurry with a trifecta off a feed from Vivian. However, the hosts rallied to deadlock the count at 26-26 later in the stanza.
WestConn would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way. They moved ahead by as many as nine points in the fourth. But, once again, the Owls stormed back to knot the score at 40-40 when they converted a lefty layup with just 3.7 seconds remaining on the clock. After a timeout, Vivian launched the final shot off the glass and thru the twine, sealing the win as time expired.
With the victory, the Wolves improved to 10-1 overall and 3-0 in league play while the Owls dropped to 3-8 and 1-4. WestConn returns to action when they host LEC foe UMass Dartmouth on Monday at 3 p.m.
