DANBURY, Conn. - Senior guard
Kendall Robinson (Bellport, N.Y.) netted a game-high 25 points while classmate forwards
Ryan Alkins (Queens, N.Y.) and
Jaheim Young (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in with 17 and 11, respectively, as the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team breezed to a 106-86 victory over visiting Castleton University in a Little East Conference affair on Monday evening at Feldman Arena.
Sophomore guard
Keeshawn Jones (Middletown, N.Y.) also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds for the Wolves.
Graduate student guard Tray Wright (Baltimore, Md.) led four Castleton players in double figures with 19 points. Senior guard John Walsh (Greenwich, N.Y.) knocked in 17. The Spartans moved the ball well against the WestConn defensive pressure as a trio of players finished with four assists apiece.Â
The hosts shot the ball well, hitting 39-of-75 (52 percent) of their attempts. The visitors went 29-of-65 (44 percent) which included hoisting up 41 three point attempts.
WestConn racked up 25 points off turnovers while Castleton earned just three. The Wolves bench outscored the Spartan reserves by a 47-21 margin.
Senior forward
Joe Brown (Brookfield, Conn.) earned the start and notched the first score for the winners as they raced out to an early 18-5 advantage.
They would not look back, expanding the lead to 25 points at the break, 59-34. Robinson rounded out the offensive barrage with a shot from the charity stripe following a flop warning.Â
The second half was a similar story. The Spartans could not put forth a rally and WestConn eventually widened the gap to 31 before setting the final score at 106-86. It was the second time this season the Wolves put up 106. Their season-high was a 110 marker against Maritime.
With the win, WestConn improved to 18-1 overall and 10-1 in league play. Castleton dropped to 3-15 and 0-10. The Wolves return to action on Wednesday for their second home LEC tilt of the week. They will tip-off against Rhode Island College at 7 p.m. before a Saturday showdown against sixth-ranked Keene State.
