Ryan Alkins (Queens, N.Y.) recorded a season-high 25 points, while classmate forward
Jaheim Young (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 17 to lift the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team to a 98-59 victory over visiting Little East Conference nemesis Rhode Island College on Wednesday night at Feldman Arena.
It also marked the 300th career victory for WestConn head coach
Guy Rancourt. Currently in his fourth season at the helm of the Wolves program, Rancourt has now accumulated 69 wins. He previously led John Jay and Lycoming College.Â
With the win, WestConn improved to 19-1 overall and 11-1 in conference play. The Anchormen fell to 6-14 and 4-8. The Wolves - who received votes in the latest D3Hoops.com Top 25 poll - return to action this Saturday at 3 p.m. They will look to avenge their lone setback of the season when they meet sixth-ranked Keene State College in an LEC battle. The Owls will enter the matchup at 20-1. Their only loss came at the hands of 11th-ranked Middlebury College.
WestConn raced out to a 29-20 advantage midway thru the opening half against the Anchormen. They widened the gap to 20 when Alkins converted a layup just before halftime to make it 51-31.Â
The Wolves did not let up in the second half. Their continued defensive pressure translated into 33 RIC turnovers for the game. Rookie guard
Jaeden Carr (Columbia, Conn.) earned five steals in just 17 minutes of play off the bench.Â
The hosts also shot the ball at a 53 percent clip (38-of-72) for the game, while the visitors went just 39 percent (22-of-56). The Wolves also edged the Anchormen down low with a 45-29 rebounding advantage.Â
Westconn senior
Kendall Robinson (Bellport, N.Y.) and rookie
Jaysean Morgan (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) added 12 and 11 points, respectively.Â
First-year guard Nathaniel Maldonado (Bronx, N.Y.) led RIC with 12 points off the bench, while junior center Ousmane Kourouma (Woonsocket, R.I.) chipped in with 11.Â
WestConn will seek to extend its win streak to 10 on Saturday.Â
