BOSTON, Mass. - Despite a team-high 13 points from junior guard
Nicole Vivian (New Milford, Conn.) and a game-high 10 rebounds from classmate forward
Gabrielle Franks (Madison, Conn.), the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team came up on the short end of a 50-45 decision at UMass Boston in a Little East Conference matchup on Wednesday night.
Sophomore forward
Rosaleen Regan (Monroe, N.J.) chipped in with 10 points and seven boards for the visitors.
Meg Dixon led all scorers with 15 for the host Beacons. She fell just short of a double-double, pulling down nine off the glass. Sunny Green added eight points, six boards and a game-high seven steals.
UMass Boston buried 5-of-13 shots (38 percent) from three-point land, while the Wolves managed just 1-of-5 (20 percent). It proved to be the difference in a tightly contested battle.
The hosts opened the game with an 11-3 run. Page Ollivierre finished off the spurt with a shot from beyond-the-arc. The Wolves rallied in the second quarter, evening the count at 20-20 when senior guard
Jasmine Caldwell (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) sank a pair from the charity stripe. The visitors would head into halftime trailing 23-22.
The lead changed hands several times in the third. WestConn would enter the final stanza ahead 38-37 courtesy of a Regan free throw.
However, the Beacons regained the advantage and stetched the gap to 48-43 when Green converted a layup off a feed from Dixon with 1:23 remaining in regulation. The Wolves were not able to recover.
With the loss, WestConn fell to 12-5 overall and 5-4 in league play, while the Beacons improved to 11-9 and 4-6. The Wolves will look to rebound when they head to UMass Dartmouth for another LEC tilt on Saturday at 1 p.m.
