DANBURY, Conn. - Junior guard
Nicole Vivian (New Milford, Conn.) scored a team-high 24 points to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team to a 86-65 victory over visiting Plymouth State University at Feldman Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Malaysia Dingle (Brockton, Mass.) and
Katelyn Fanning (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) added 15 and 12 points, respectively, for the winners.
WestConn, now 12-4 overall and 5-3 in the Little East Conference, led from the opening tip and raced out to a 17-0 lead when
Maggie Nardini (Sandwich, Mass.) canned a short jumper with 4:02 remaining in the first period.
The Wolves largest lead would come in the final stanza, 28 points, when
Kirsten Rodriguez (Fairfield, Conn.) made the front end of two free throws to give the hosts a 73-46 advantage.
Plymouth State, now 5-11 overall and winless in the league at 0-9, were led by Jalen Cook's (Monkton, Vt.) game-high 28 points. She connected on 9-of-18 shots from the field, 3-of-7 from beyond the arch and was 7-of-10 from the charity stripe.
Sophie George (Meredith, N.H.) and Sarah Sweet (Narragansett, R.I.) added 15 and 11 points, respectively, for the Panthers.
The Wolves opened on a blistering shooting pace, connecting on 75% of their attempts from the field in the first period, 9-of-12, then went into intermission with 67% accuracy. On the game, the winners converted 30-of-51 tries from the field for a 59% tally.
Dingle, who was making her first start of the season at the point, canned her first five attempts including going 4-of-4 from three-dom.
WestConn hits the road on a back-to-back Massachusetts swing this coming week. It visits UMass Boston on Wednesday, January 25 for a 5:30 pm tip with the Beacons. The Wolves travel to UMass Dartmouth a week from today for a 1 pm tilt with the Corsairs.
The Panthers play host to intra-state rival Keene State College on Wednesday. Game time is also at 5:30 pm.
