Callahan's Hat Trick Propels Wolves Over Elms

DANBURY, Conn. – Junior Alessia Callahan (Glassboro, N.J.) notched a hat trick to lead the Western Connecticut State University field hockey team to a 6-0 shutout win over visiting non-league opponent Elms College on Wednesday night at the Westside Athletic Complex.

Seniors Samantha Dultz (Belvidere, N.J) and Phalina Sciara (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) each chipped in with a goal and an assist for the hosts.

WestConn dominated play en route to a 20-1 advantage in shots and an 11-4 gap in penalty corner attempts.

Senior goalkeeper Kayla Hnasko (Raritan, N.J) earned her first win of the season for the Wolves.

The hosts got off to a fast start as Callahan fired a shot off the crossbar, gathered the rebound and found the back of the cage less than three minutes into the contest.
Moments later, senior Sophie Leeds (Trumbull, Conn.) gathered another rebound and fired a shot inside the post to put the Wolves up 2-0.

They would stretch the lead to 4-0 at the half. Callahan completed the hat trick in the third quarter, good for her team-leading sixth goal of the season before Sciara netted her first scoring strike of the campaign in the fourth, rounding the count out at 6-0.

With the win, WestConn improved to 3-4 overall, while the Blazers dropped to 0-6. The Wolves return to action when they square off against visiting LEC nemesis Keene State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
