WestConn Holds On For 34-20 Win At Westfield State

WESTFIELD, Mass. - Sophomore quarterback John Giller threw three touchdown passes and senior running back Chad Blaszky ran in for another to lead the Western Connecticut State University to a 34-20 victory over host Westfield State University at Alumni Field on Friday night.  It was the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference opener for both sides.

Giller hurled a pair of TD pass Eli Koukoulis of  31and 16 yards and a 35 -ard strike  to Julian Ferguson before finishing the night completing 17 of 35 passes for 305 yards.

Ferguson led all receivers with five catches for 107 yards while Koukoulis grabbed a trio of throws for 77 additional yards.

Blaszky's one-yard plunge with 5:44 remaining before intermission put the visitors up, 17-0.  He finished with a game-high 22 carries and 113 yards.

The Wolves would tack on another score before the break when Giller and Ferguson hooked up at the 3:32 mark of the second stanza.

Westfield State, now 0-3 overall, sandwiched a two-yard touchdown run by Shan Clark and a 19-yard TD reception from Colby Pires to Dylan Disabella inside one minute of the first half around WestConn's Anthony Weidtman 36-yard field goal as time ran out in the half.  The Owls drew with 13 points, 27-14 with the aerial score 3:30 into the third period.

Weidtman opened the game's scoring with a 22-yard boot with 3:07 left in the first stanza.

Koukoulis' insurance touchdown reception built WestConn's lead back up to 34-14 with 2:50 remaining in the third quarter.

Pires found Kordell Parrish from 11 yards out to cut the Owls' deficit back to 14 points, 34-20 with eight ticks left in the third.

Pires completed 24 of 37 throws for 262 yards and the two TDs.

Defensively, Jaedan Alexander registered a team-high nine tackles while Nosa Uzamere and Stephen Johnson finished with eight and six take downs, respectively.

WSU's Tyler Cooley recorded a game-high 13 tackles with an eight-yard quarterback sack.

The Wolves, now 2-1 and winners of two straight, open their home slate next Saturday night when they welcome Bridgewater State University to the Westside Athletic Complex.  Homecoming Saturday begins at 5 pm.

Westfield State plays host to Framingham State University on September 24.  Kick-off is slated for 2 pm.
