CASTLETON, VT - Rookie
Nicholas Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y.) pounded out five hits and senior
Kyle Brelling (Bethel, Conn.) put forth a stellar pitching performance as the Western Connecticut State University baseball team split a doubleheader at Little East Conference foe Castleton University on Saturday. Moeller racked up four RBI's in the opening 8-3 victory before the Wolves fell in Game Two, 12-7.
Game One was close in the early going. Brelling gave up a run in the second inning before allowing a solo homer in the third as the hosts built an early 2-0 advantage. Those were the only runs he allowed as he settled down and finished his outing with seven strike outs.Â
WestConn would erupt to plate four runs in the sixth and another four in the seventh. Moeller got things started when he drove in a pair of runs with a single to right. Senior catcher
Zach Edwards (Seymour, Conn.) belted a shot over the wall before junior first baseman
Joe Gambino (Stamford, Conn.) notched an RBI single to center, widening the WestConn lead to 6-2. Moments later, Moeller would plate another two runs when he ripped a double into the left center gap. The hosts answered with a sacrifice fly to tally a run and round the count out at 8-3.Â
The second contest was close early on. However, WestConn would seize a 6-4 lead in the fifth when junior
Cameron Bogli (Vernon, Conn.) roped a bases loaded single to right. Castleton would retaliate and take a two run lead in the bottom half of the frame before Bogli came up big again. This time he smacked a single to center to score another run in the seventh, slicing the deficit to 8-7. But the hosts would have yet another answer as they plated another four runners in the bottom half en route to the win.
With the split, WestConn improved to 9-16 overall and 5-10 in LEC play, while the Spartans improved to 10-19-1.Â
The Wolves return to action tomorrow for a non-league twin bill at SUNY Sullivan. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m.
