Wolves Close Out LEC Regular Season With Loss To RIC

DANBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University baseball team closed out its Little East Conference regular-season slate with an 11-1 loss to visiting Rhode Island College on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior center fielder Zach Edwards belted a double and drove in one run while classmate Kevin Smith went 2-for-4 with a two-bagger to pace the Wolves' offense.

The Anchormen, which improved to 25-8-1 overall and 11-3 in the LEC, sprayed 14 hits around Westside Field including doubles from two from Sean Helfrich, and one each from Cameron Santerre, Joey Coro and pinch hitter Dole Podedworny.

The visitor's offensive output was book-ended by four runs in the opening inning and four more in the top of the ninth inning.

Graduate student Mason Blanchette suffered the loss and drops to 1-3 in his final campaign.  He allowed six runs on eight hits, struck out two and walked a pair in three and a third innings.  Justin Grullon came on for the next four-plus innings and allowed three runs on three hits.  He struck out four and walked three.  Senior Tyler Olmo came on for the final three RIC outs.  He allowed two runs on three hits.

Cheshire, Conn. native Connor Davey improves to 5-2 on the season after going six strong inning from the bump.  He allowed one runs on six hits, struck out seven and walked one.  Cameron Foster pitched a scoreless seventh inning before fireballer Shaun Gamelin struck out the final six Wolves.

WestConn, now 9-17 overall and 5-11 in the conference, remain alive for the sixth and final spot in the upcoming LEC Tournament.  It will need Plymouth State University and University of Massachusetts Dartmouth to lose both ends of their doubleheaders against RIC and Keene State College, respectively, this Saturday.

The Wolves will make up their season-opening twin bill against Yeshiva University on Sunday, May 8.  First pitch is slated for 11 am at Westside Field on Mother's Day.
