DANBURY, Conn. - Junior midfielder
Colleen Foley scored the game-winning goal with 30 seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team to a thrilling 15-14 victory over visiting Springfield College at a soaked Westside Athletic Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Foley scored the final three goals for WestConn after it fell behind to The Pride, 14-12 midway through the fourth quarter. Her unassisted goals came at 5:15 and 1:54 of the final stanza before tickling the twine, off a free-position attempt with half a minute to go in overtime. She now has nine goals after registering five goals on Sunday.
There were five deadlocks and five lead changes in today's non-conference affair between WestConn and Springfield. If you were able to listen to WCSU Hall of Famer Bart Busterna call the action, you noticed there were 52 infractions, eight yellow cards distributed and 16 free-position attempts awarded in the hard-fought match.
WestConn, which improves to 7-2 on the season, was lead by Foley and
Colleen Crotty's five markers.Â
Dominique DeMarsico and
Brianna Pota added a pair of goals each and
Alexa Riggio was credited with the winner's remaining tally.
Leading the way for Springfield, which drops to 6-4 on the season, was Katie Martel, who finished with a game-high six goals.
Senior Taylor Pichel added three goals for the Pride, including her 100th career marker which broke a 9-9 tie with 4:43 remaining in the third period.
Anna Schipf earned the victory between the pipes after making a dozen saves.
Emily McDermott made seven stops for Springfield.
WestConn continues its homestand on Wednesday when it plays host to Coast Guard. Game time is slated for 5 pm.
The Pride host cross-town rival Western New England University on Thursday, April 7. Game time is set for 5 pm against the Golden Bears.
