DANBURY, Conn. - In a game that featured 13 pitching changes, the WestConn baseball team fell to visiting non-conference foe Wesleyan University, 16-2, on a cold and windy day at Westside Field on Wednesday afternoon. However, senior relief pitcher
Tyler Olmo (Ardsley, N.Y.) settled things down, tossing four innings of solid work while allowing just one run to the Cardinals.
WestConn showed some fight in the eighth inning as well. With two outs recorded, sophomore
Julian Gonzalez (Wethersfield, Conn.) ripped a stand up triple to right field. Moments later, rookie
Nicholas Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y.) drove him across the plate when he smashed a single up the middle.Â
The visitors would tack onto their lead in the ninth. Freshman pinch hitter Evan Diaz (Yonkers, N.Y.) smacked a three-run homer just over the center field wall to round the scoring out at 16-2.Â
Wesleyan utilized a committee of nine different pitchers - one each inning - which kept the hosts off balance.Â
With the loss, WestConn dropped to 8-15 overall, while the Cardinals improved to 18-11. The Wolves return to action for a doubleheader at Little East Conference nemesis Castleton University on Saturday at Noon.Â
