KEENE, N.H. - Senior
Max Gregory (Jewitt City, Conn.) racked up six hits on the afternoon, while senior
Kyle Brelling (Bethel, Conn.) and rookie
Connor Gannon (New Milford, Conn.) each tossed complete games to lead the Western Connecticut State University baseball team to a pair of wins at Little East Conference foe Keene State in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Brelling pitched the opening 3-0 shutout before Gannon went the distance in a 7-3 victory in Game Two.
Gregory got things started for WestConn with an RBI single in the third inning of Game One. He followed it up with yet another single to left in the fifth, scoring another run to make it 2-0. Senior
Jake Montas (Ellington, Conn.) rounded the scoring out at 3-0 with an RBI sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Brelling was stellar on the mound, allowing just four hits while striking out eight batters to earn the win.
It was more of the same in Game Two as WestConn received another shining performance from Gannon. He allowed just three runs on five hits while fanning six Keene State batters.
The visitors would jump ahead 3-0 in the first. Gregory came around to score when rookie
Nicholas Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y.) smashed a double into the right-center gap.Â
They would tack more runs on in the fifth to capture a 6-0 advantage when Moeller ripped a two-run homer over the left field wall. Gregory would also come around to score after reaching base yet again. Moeller added an RBI single in the seventh, widening the gap to 7-0.Â
Keene State countered with a run in the seventh and a pair in the ninth, courtesy of a triple and double from Beayon. However, WestConn would put an end to the comeback and secure the win.
The Wolves improved to 8-13 overall and 4-8 in league play, while the Owls dropped to 6-22 and 2-8. WestConn returns to the field on Monday at 3 p.m. when they host LEC archrival Eastern Connecticut.Â
