PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Western Connecticut State University senior
Max Gregory (Jewitt City, Conn.) pounded out four hits and four RBI's in a doubleheader at Little East Conference foe Plymouth State University on Friday at Parish Field. The WestConn baseball squad fell in the opener, 7-2, before coming up with a victory in Game Two, 12-2.
With the split, WestConn moved to 5-11 overall and 1-5 in league play, while the Panthers went to 10-17 and 2-5.
The count was deadlocked at 2-2 before Plymouth seized the lead in the top of the eighth in Game One. The hosts tallied an unearned run to jump ahead 3-2 before adding yet another in the ninth. They would add a trio of hits to widen the gap to 7-2 and would not relinquish the lead. Gregory notched a triple and a single in the loss.
The hosts would open Game Two with a 1-0 advantage. However, WestConn tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom half of the first with off a Gregory sacrifice fly. Moments later, junior
Joe Gambino (Stamford, Conn.) roped a shot down the right field line to drive in a run and make it 2-1.
WestConn would then erupt to smack four home runs. Rookie
Nicholas Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y.) started the surge with a two-run blast over the left field wall in the third. Senior
Jake Montas (Ellington, Conn.) and Gambino followed up with solo shots of their own, widening the gap to 6-1 in the fifth.
Gregory would rip a three-run shot over the wall, extending the advantage to 10-1 in the sixth. WestConn would not look back en route to the win.
WCSU returns to action for another LEC tilt when they travel to Rhode Island College on Tuesday.
