BOSTON, Mass. - The Western Connecticut State University baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at Little East Conference nemesis UMass-Boston on Saturday afternoon. WCSU dropped the opener, 9-0, before falling in the nightcap, 6-2, in six innings.
It was tough to get much going in the opener. The visitors managed to knock two hits against tough pitching. Junior
Joe Gambino (Stamford, Conn.) and rookie
Nicholas Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y.) each put up singles for WestConn. Senior starting pitcher
Kyle Brelling (Bethel, Conn.) tossed seven strong innings while striking out nine batters to take the tough-luck loss, falling to 1-2 on the campaign.
In Game Two, things looked good early for WestConn. They jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the second frame. Senior
Kevin Smith (Vernon, Conn.) ripped a double down the left field line. Moments later, junior
Joe Desanctis (Brewster, N.Y.) smashed a homer over the left field wall.
However, the hosts countered with a four-run fifth inning before adding a pair of insurance tallies in the sixth to wrap up the action.
WestConn moved to 4-7 overall and 0-2 in league play, while the Beacons improved to 11-2 and 2-0. WestConn was scheduled to play tomorrow but the inclement weather of this afternoon has postponed the twin bill.
