FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Despite three towering home runs, the Western Connecticut State University baseball team fell to Franciscan University, 10-6, to wrap up their spring trip on Friday. With the loss, WestConn moved to 4-4 overall while the Barons improved to 7-1.
Trailing 7-0 in the third inning, the WestConn bats started to come alive. Junior
Joe Gambino (Stamford, Conn.) got things started with an RBI double. In the fourth, junior
Joe Desanctis (Brewster, N.Y.) smashed a solo shot over the wall. Moments later, senior
Zach Edwards (Seymour, Conn.) did the same, trimming the advantage to 7-3.Â
Franciscan would add to their lead with runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh frames to make it 10-3. WestConn notched a run in the seventh before rookie
Nicholas Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y.) stroked the third homer of the afternoon for WestConn, slicing it to 10-5. They would add another run but couldn't complete the comeback.
WestConn returns to action at non-league foe Ramapo College on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
