FORT PIERCE, Fla. - After a stellar season opening performance win against Gettysburg College on Saturday, the Western Connecticut State University baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Washington College (Maryland) on Sunday. WCSU lost the opener, 7-1, before falling in the second contest, 6-0.
Washington sent five unearned runners across the plate in the second inning to take an early lead in the opener. Chris Baker smacked a triple to clear the bases and would score later in the frame off a passed ball, good for a 5-0 lead.
WestConn broke up the shut out when junior
Christopher Ehlers (Norwalk, Conn.) reached on a fielder's choice to score the lone run of the game. Washington would add another pair in the top of the seventh to round the scoring out at 7-1.
It was more of the same in Game Two. The squad was matched up against a premier Division III starting pitcher in Joe Morrissey. However, the WestConn bright spot came from junior
Nick Lepere (Beacon, N.Y.) who notched a pair of hits in the affair. They put up a solid effort against Morrissey who finished with the win, improving to 3-0, while striking out seven WestConn batters.
With the pair of losses, WestConn dropped to 1-2 overall, while Washington improved to 7-3. WCSU returns to action for yet another twin bill when they square up against Albright College on Monday at 10 a.m.
